Hinged or stayed along the side of the window panel, they open out to provide ventilation control. When handed both left and right, casements are excellent for catching directional breezes and guiding the airflow inside.
When used with friction stays, the operable panel can be opened to approx. 90 degrees, which allows ease of cleaning from the inside, which is great for those windows not accessible from the outside.
Casements may not be suitable in areas that have narrow walkways, as the operable sash will project from the frame when in the open position.
